ORLANDO SCIENCE CENTER LIFE

The Orlando Science Center’s LIFE exhibit is a groundbreaking project, bringing the swamp, rainforest, and ocean environments to life. Partnering with McCree Architects and Engineers, Inc., and Roto, McCree’s design-build efforts integrated advanced mechanical, structural, electrical, and plumbing systems to enhance visitor engagement. The exhibit features a 5,000-gallon saltwater aquarium, a 1,000-gallon freshwater aquarium, and an immersive rainforest with automated climate control. Specialty lighting, life support systems, and safety measures, like emergency egress systems, were key components. This project’s sophisticated infrastructure and innovative design earned McCree the prestigious Eagle Award.

The LIFE exhibit consists of three unique environments: swamp, ocean, and rainforest. The swamp houses species like turtles and alligators, while the ocean features a live coral display and touch tanks. The rainforest section showcases free-roaming animals, including sloths and tamarin monkeys, with sensors and lights mimicking natural cycles. The project also prioritized sustainability by adhering to LEED standards, setting a benchmark for future science exhibits.

McCree’s work on the Zion Lutheran Evangelical Church masterfully combines historical charm with modern construction. The design featured pre-cast wall panels, exposed heavy timber trusses, and gothic arched windows to create a timeless structure built to endure. The interior spaces, including the sanctuary and fellowship hall, were designed with custom details like marble flooring, stained glass windows, and cast-in-place structures, preserving the church’s sacred atmosphere. McCree’s thoughtful design also extended to eco-friendly elements, such as natural landscaping and minimal asphalt use, ensuring that the church remains a cherished landmark while respecting Florida’s environment.
